Sender Policy Framework, or SPF, is one of the most commonly used email authentication protocols. Although SPF can be used by itself, the DMARC standard uses both SPF and DKIM to validate email.

Here’s how email is authenticated using SPF:
As the owner of the sending domain, you publish SPF TXT records onto your DNS. These records contain a list of all the IP addresses or servers that are authorized to send emails from your domain.
When an email is sent from your domain, the receiving email server checks the SPF record on your DNS.
If the sender’s IP address or server matches one that’s on the list, the email is authenticated. If none of the IP addresses match, the validation fails.
Emails that pass SPF authentication are allowed to reach their destination inboxes, while those that fail might not.
